What drugs increase your risk of getting thrush?

Drugs that reduce your immune system, reduce the number of competitive bacteria and increase sugar availability will all increase your risk of developing thrush. Here are the top three you should be aware of:

Antibiotics

Antibiotics which kill off your good bacteria (as well as bad) can massively increase your risk of thrush. These include:

  • Augmentin

  • Amoxicillin

  • Penicillin

  • Any other antibiotic.

Make sure you're given prophylactic antifungals in collaboration with antibiotics to reduce your risk of a severe thrush infection.

Corticosteroids

These can suppress local or systemic immunity as well as thin the skin which weakens the bloody/ body barrier. Use in absolute moderation as indicated by your Doctor.

  • Examples:

    • Dermovate

    • Betnovate

    • Hydrocortisone

Immuno-suppresants

These lower overall immune defence against fungi. Again discuss prophylactic antifungals with your doctor if you're prone to thrush.

  • Examples:

    • Methotrexate

    • Azathioprine

    • Cyclosporine

    • Chemotherapy drugs
